Title |
SWYOR-B1FC1F Post Medieval Seal Matrix |
||
Description |
English: A silver swivelling fob seal of later post-Medieval date, about AD 1793 - 1819. The matrix is a sub-rectangular plaque (rectangular with the corners cut off) with the design of a three masted sailing ship engraved on one face. There are badly worn hallmarks on the other face. The matrix pivots on an iron spindle within a silver frame. The frame fits closely round half of the perimeter of the matrix and is open on the other half. A tapering handle of three strands extends from the long edge of the rectangle. This terminates in an oval loop surmounted by a knop. The frame is also hallmarked on the long edge of the rectangle. An anchor shows that it was assayed in Birmingham. The maker's mark appears to be for Joseph Wilmore. It probably dates from AD 1793 or 1819 with the date letter being a V in a square cartouche, probably actually a shield shaped cartouche with the bottom off the edge of the frame. The matrix is 35.4mm long, 23.1mm wide and 2.2mm thick. It weighs 7.86g. |
