Description
Svenska: FIGUR. Krabba i lotusblad. Dehua-porslin går i Europa också under benämningen Blanc-de-Chine. Bladet skålformigt med sju flikar. Krabban upptar hela bladet. Jfr. William R. Sargent. Figure, Crab on a lotus leaf. Dehua ware 17th-early 18th century. A later export tureen, enamelled in colours, in form of a crab is shown inWilliam R. Sargent Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics From the Peabody Essex Museum (2012), No.256.Porcelain crab with transparent glazeDehua ware, Qing dynasty, 17th centuryBecause the Chinese language has thousands of characters but a limited range of sounds, the use of puns or rebuses is common. Crab and lotus form a rebus "May you have a harmonious marriage year after year", so this piece would be suitable as a wedding gift.
