- Hello Rajesh, Just one minute I am putting you on loudspeaker. OK, Will you please introduce yourself? Who are you? Where do you work?
- Rajesh
- My name is Doctor Rajesh, I work in Jhalavad Medical college Rajasthan, I am a senior demonstrator in microbiology there.
- Mayur
- Ok. Rajesh, actually I was working on an article for "Gilli Danda" and when I tried to search about this on the web, I found that there were articles on Hindi and English Wikipedia, but there were a lack of citations in both places. I also searched for it in print media but there was insufficient material. I know that you have played this game in your childhood and I would like to get some information regarding this which is not available in print media that can be used as a citations on Wikipedia. Our Conversation is being recorded and it will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.Do you give us permission for this?
- Rajesh
- Sure, I have no objection with this as you are doing a good job. Such games should be known to world...
- Mayur
- Thank you. Can you tell us how you know Gilli-danda? What is Gilli-danda? How do we play it?
- Rajesh
- Being an Indian and an inhabitant of a rural area I know a lot about this game.
- Mayur
- Can you give us more details in Hindi?
- Rajesh
- Actually this game consists of a wooden truncheon.
- Mayur
- First of all please tell us what is Gilli-danda?
- Rajesh
- Gilli-danda is an ancient Indian version of cricket. We have a gilli (small truncheon) in place of a ball. The gilli is made of wood, which can be of normal quality but it should be hard. This wooden truncheon is bevelled at its both ends.
- Mayur
- How many players can participate in this game? Can it be played by girls and boys in a group?
- Rajesh
- Two or more players can participate in this game, and it is played in a group. Both girls and boys can play - this is the general format in villages.
- Mayur
- Which city do you belong to? Was that game played there? How much old is this game?
- Rajesh
- I am from Raisingnagar, and this game is played in many villages and cities. It is very old and it is also described in Vedic Literature.
- Mayur
- Can you tell us about whole process of playing this game?
- Rajesh
- First of all, we have to make two groups consisting of an equal number of players, We can change the number of players as per our convenience. After that we take a 2-3 inch long small wooden truncheon (gilli) and bevel it at both ends. We keep one more wooden truncheon (danda). We can also keep one reserve gilli in case of failure of the first gilli. We make a hole of a size less than the gilli somewhere in plain ground. After that, we keep the gilli inside the hole at an angle of 90 degrees such that some of it part lies outside of hole, after which we strike this outside part with the danda and hurl the gilli up in the air. In the meantime, all players try to catch the gilli like a cricket ball. We strike the gilli when it is in the air, and the aim for the thrower is to throw it as far as possible. Players who can throw a gilli at a distant place win. If a player catches a gilli in the air, then the player who throws the gilli looses. If the gilli stikes the danda, then the player gets another turn. If the gilli connects when striking with the danda, and the player strikes the gilli in such a way that danda is below his feet while striking, it is called Hucchko. Each player gets three chances to strike the gilli. This game is played with a points system. For counting, we consider how much time the opposition team took to successfully strike a gilli with a danda, or catch a gilli, or who reaches the gilli in least steps when it is thrown to a place as far as possible. The game is begun by a toss.
- Mayur
- So can we assume that cricket is inspired by this game?
- Rajesh
- Sure, we could say that cricket is inspired by gilli-danda. In the same way as football was inspired from the sport of soldiers who cut their enemies' heads and threw them up in the air. Gilli-danda game was played in the age of my parents, and it is also played in many citiesm but due to the increasing popularity of cricket, it remains limited to villages and small cities today.
- Mayur
- Thank you very much Rajesh, I have learnt many things from you that I could not have found elsewhere.
- Rajesh
- Thank you, I am also very keen that Wikipedia carries the right information on Gilli-danda.
- Mayur
- Thank you.
