Paul Jones Weekly #10 [1905-12-02]. From J. Randolph Cox's The Dime Novel Companion: "JONES, PAUL (character) Hero of 19 stories in the Winner Company's (Street

& Smith's) *Paul Jones Weekly in 1905 and 1906. The stories were written by John DeMorgan and *William Wallace Cook under the pseudonym *Captain Luther Barr and loosely based on the life and career of John Paul Jones (1747-1792), popular hero of the American revolution. Paul Jones (as he is constantly referred to in the fiction) is a gallant and fearless naval officer in charge of a different ship in each story. His comrades in the early stories are first officer Richard Dale, Ensign Jimmie Blake, and boatswain Old Bill Cuff, but these fade from the picture to be replaced by a series of others. Most of his adventures involve the pursuit of British ships, but some take place on shore. One is set partially on Jones' own plantation in Virginia. The historical details are few, but convincing. The first story is "Paul Jones' Cruise for Glory; or, The Sign of the Coiled Rattlesnake," 1-PJW, Sept. 30, 1905; the final published story is "The Cruise of the Eagle; or, Rescued by Paul Jones," 19-PJW, Feb. 3, 1906. A 20th story was planned, but never published.
