Description
English: Arrival of participants in Bruges for the opening of the academic year of the College of Europe (from left to right): in the 1st row: Jacques Delors, 2nd, and Philippe, Prince of Belgium, 3rd; in the 2nd row: Viviane Reding, Member of the EC in charge of Education and Culture, 1st. The academic year 1999-2000 of the College of Europe in Bruges was opened on 30th September 1999 with a ceremony at Bruges city hall. The College celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1999. The opening ceremony was followed by the XVIIth conference "European Carrefour on Science and Culture" on the theme "Towards a Knowledge Society." The conferences are regular events organised by the Forward Studies Unit of the EC where representatives from the worlds of the arts and culture, universities and civil society gather together. Jacques Delors, former President of the EC, and President of the Administrative Board of the College of Europe, gave the speech at the opening of the conference.
