Summary[edit]
DescriptionNYC Tries Out 4 Measly Small Open-Streets So People Can Get More Social Distancing.webm |
English: Today New York City began a pilot program pushed by Gov Cuomo to give some space for people to maintain physical separation but also get some exercise or stress relief from being inside 23+ hours per day.
The Mayor and NYC DOT chose 34th Avenue in our neighborhood as the only spot in Queens. A paltry 7 blocks (34th Avenue between 73rd and 80th streets), and only 4 sites total. Sad it was so small. But as you can see people came out and were very good about maintaining spacing. My kid enjoyed it a lot and kept talking about how it was "mostly car-free". What the city needs to really do for this to work and not become crowded is to do this on a big scale. Ask the NYPD or local Communities to determine a few streets in each neighborhood to close down. For example, this was only 7 blocks of 34th Avenue, it runs about 60. It could easily be closed the entire length. |
