English: Live-cell microscopy of the merge between dominant P. mirabilis HI4320 and susceptible 9C1 swarms. Strain HI4320 expressing VipA::sfGFP under control of pBAD is observed merging with mutant 9C1 expressing dsRED. The images were taken at the boundary between the red and green swarms as the two swarms merge. The susceptible 9C1 mutant swarm (red) is unable to penetrate the dominant parental wild-type HI4320 swarm (green) due to an immune-deficiency. Swarms were visualized on swarm agar containing 10 mM L-arabinose to induce expression of the VipA::sfGFP translational fusion. Single channel fluorescence, brightfield, and merged images are presented. |
