In contrast to normal embryos, 12 nuclei (blue dots) that initially lie at the superficial surface of the neural plate are seen to distribute themselves throughout the deeper layers of the neural plate in subsequent frames. Nuclei that appear only in later frames at the superficial surface are marked with red and green dots. The depth of the neural plate is also seen to enlarge as the movie progresses.
