Description

One of the two giant sequoia trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum, also known as Wellingtonia or Sierra redwood) in the park of the Marienburg, Thal canton of St Gallen, Switzerland. In its homeland, the Sierra Nevada in California, the giant sequoia grows at an altitude of 1500 to 2500 m above sea level. There it grows up to 130 m high and the trunk reaches a diameter of up to 12 m and can become up to 3000 years old. This makes the trees of this species one of the largest in the world. Unfortunately, it is threatened with extinction. The castle and the park of Marienburg are a cultural asset of regional importance (KGS no. 14082).
