Summary[edit]
DescriptionMaharajah's Well information board, Stoke Row, Oxfordshire, England.jpg |
English: "The Maharajah's Well, read all about it" OK, an old (and poor) joke. This is the sign nearby telling you all about it.
The gist is that the English Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces of India, Edward Anderdon Reade, came from nearby Ipsden. When talking to the Maharajah of Benares he told him of the need to supply the expanding hamlet of Stoke Row with drinking water so the Maharajah gave a donation to allow the well to be sunk. The Maharajah never visited "his" well but Mr Reade built it with an ornate superstructure that "would lend itself to photography" so the Maharajah could be shown pictures. The well is 368 feet deep (more than twice the height of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square), and takes 10 minutes to wind up two 9-gallon buckets, yielding 600 gallons per day. The well was in use until 1939, and was restored, along with the adjacent well keeper's cottage, between 1979 and 1983 at a cost of £32,000. |
