Onder een dreigende lucht zitten op een boerenwagen rooms-katholieke en remonstrantse geestelijken. Zij willen elk een andere kant op. Maar welke kant de wagen ook op gaat, de bijbel - die eronder ligt - zal vertrapt worden. Beide groepen hebben volgens de schilder ongelijk; zijn sympathie ligt kennelijk bij de contraremonstranten.
