Summary
[edit]DescriptionLudlow Castle, the outer bailey - geograph.org.uk - 1744604.jpg |
English: Ludlow Castle, the outer bailey Ludlow Castle occupies a fine defensive position. It stands on high ground and is guarded by two rivers, the Teme and the Corve. Stone for building was readily available and a deep well was sunk down to the level of the River Teme. The well stands in what is now the inner bailey. Started by the de Lacys in 1086, to hold back the unconquered Welsh, the castle passed eventually into the hands of the Mortimers and then to Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York (whose mother was a Mortimer). It became Crown property in 1461 and for the next 350 years, remained a royal castle, except for a brief period during the Civil War and Commonwealth. It was eventually abandoned in 1689 and fell into ruin. Since 1811 the castle has been owned by the Earls of Powis who have opened it to the public. |
