Description |
Slightly larger-than-life figure of a woman from the workshop of the Reyff brothers. It is presumably St. Mary Salome. She is understood to be a disciple of Jesus. She was one of the women who witnessed the crucifixion and she was the first to come to the empty tomb after its resurrection. She is identified in Christian tradition as the mother of the sons of Zebedee, that is, James the Elder and John. According to Mark's Gospel, she was therefore the wife of Zebedee. Less likely is the assumption that she was St. Elizabeth. She was the mother of John the Baptist. On the console the coats of arms of François-Pierre des Granges and that of his wife Marie-Catherine Werly. |

Object history | The statues and reliefs on the outside were restored in 1723 and 1724 by Father Paul Eltschinger, in 1784 by the sculptor Rodolphe Muller and in 1838 by Nicolas Kessler. Then they were replaced by copies: in 1889 the three southern statues by C. Weber, in 1912 two more statues, probably by Ampellio Regazzoni and from 1914 to 1949 the remaining pieces by Théo Aeby. It should be added that the architecture itself underwent some repairs in 1916. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
