Clinging to the screen of a computer, a living gecko is hunting the pointer of a mouse, assimilated to a tasty prey

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Clinging to the screen of a computer, a real gecko Hemidactylus frenatus is hunting the pointer of the mouse, assimilated to a tasty prey. The arrow is followed for more than a minute by the young reptile, perceiving the silhouette of something like an insect. With the mouse, the user of the computer can move the cursor to cause the almost automatic movement of the gecko, unable to make visually the difference between a small triangular virtual shape and a real animal on the run. It is thus a sensory illusion, where the pointer acts like a lure to influence an instinctive animal behavior. Usually, these geckos feed on small butterflies attracted by light through window panes, where they are easily captured. In addition to the similar appearance of the prey with ordinary food, the confusion can also be explained by the juvenile predator, poorly experienced. This image won the 3rd prize of the Wiki Science Competition category Wildlife and nature from France in 2019.
