Description |
Svenska: FIGUR. Liu Hai. Figure. Porcelain figure of Liu Hai with transparent glaze, and added enamels (now worn). Liu Hai (literally “sea toad”) is the God of Wealth, commonly shown baiting a three-legged toad with coins, to tempt that creature of ill-omen from the depths. Here the deity hops on one leg with a string of cash, half on his shoulder and half on the ground, while the toad leaps up after them. The coins bear a Kangxi mark, which is a useful reference point for dating. Liu Hai and his toad are said to be depicted in the shadows of the moon, and a toad with a gold coin in its mouth was a common talisman to promote business prosperity. White Dehua wares were sometimes considered too plain in Europe, where extra enamelling was added to give colour. |
