A brown football-shaped fossil fish facing left on tan stone. It has a black face and its dorsal and anal fins are so far back they are touching the tail fin. The edge of the rock can be seen on the top left corner just above the fish's face and a small brown coprolite is visible above and behind the fish.

Large teeth and rear-placed fins make Phareodus encaustus well suited for catching and eating other fish. The specimen is approximately 25 cm long. Catalog number FOBU17694.
