Description
Ming-dynasty, Dehua ware 17th century.Inscription from Chan Buddhist scriptures.Dehua ware porcelain alms bowl and standMing dynasty, 16th- 17th centuryLike many Western assemblages of the time, the Hallwyl collection contains a wide variety of good-quality Blanc de Chine, as Dehua ware was known. Made of pure, white porcelain and covered with transparent glaze, they were admired both in China and abroad. This rounded bowl on a stand is a Buddhist alms bowl and bears an inscription relating to Zen Buddhism. It comes not from a particular book of sutras, but is rather a shorthand combination of lines taken from longer prayers:“Flavoursome tea enriches a man, in a moment of time much shorter than attaining knowledge through Buddhist practice: but the reading of sutras that shower down the Buddha truth can also enrich, in a moment”
