“February 11th 1854
Dear friend
In answer to your letter which I received dated the 23th of January I have seated my self to write a few lines to you to state the particulars you spoke of getting a pare of steers to put in the henyard I think it wold be a good plan it wold keep the gras out of the yard so that we can see the chickens our cow is doing very well I think she will have a steer before long I think I will put it in your yard then it will be there when you come home your pigs is getting along well George Hunter has bought two pigs of the Dutchman Dick I have wished for you this week we have had vacation and we have had plenty of fine skating and we would have had sport if you had been hear although we might have found as a boy did on the lake he went from Waterloo to the lake to skate and he skated in a hole where people had been getting out Ice and he was drowned before they could get him out."
On back of document: "there has been two others drowned they ware in a boat and the boat upset and they ware drowned -- Dick I hope you will excuse me for not writing before as I have not had time to write I have so many choares to do and Ma has not been well Dick I hope the letter you wrote and did not direct was not to any of those pretty girls for it wood be rather a sad affir to have a stranger read a love letter unless it was his own I presume you have heard that Wm [Morin?] has lost a sister she died at Utica Hiram Sotherland has not returned home yet I believe I have written all the particulars so I will bring my letter to a close I remain as ever yours truly
