English: Soy economista en el Centro de Salud Global de los CDC.
Mi interés en economía comenzó cuando era niña y quería combatir la pobreza. Me interesé en salud cuando estaba estudiando mi doctorado en RAND y colaboré en estudios que buscaban mejorar la salud de la población a través de la salud preventiva. En CDC, analizo datos para ver si una política o una intervención de vacunación en países pobres es eficaz desde el punto de vista económico. Las vacunas previenen enfermedades y reducen costos. Mi trabajo es estimar los costos y los beneficios. El resultado de estas evaluaciones contribuye a extender el uso de las vacunas en los lugares donde son más necesarias y efectivas, y nos ayudan a controlar y prevenir enfermedades. La mayor parte de mi trabajo la hago desde mi escritorio. Sin embargo, a veces hago vistas de campo para recolectar datos, dar capacitación a equipos locales en economía de la salud, y ayudar a los países a usar información económica para tomar sus decisiones de salud pública. [PAUSE] Por ejemplo, evalué el costo de una intervención que refiere a niños para recibir actas de nacimiento y vacunas en una zona rural de Zambia, y estimé el costo de la fiebre tifoidea en países con altas tasas de dicha enfermedad como Nepal, Bangladesh y Pakistán, para permitirles tomar la mejor decisión con respecto a la introducción de vacunas contra la tifoidea en contextos específicos. Mi trabajo en CDC es emocionante. Me permite usar mis conocimientos de economía para combatir enfermedades y detener su propagación a través de la vacunación y al mejorar la salud de la gente de varias partes del mundo.
