English: I’ve been at CDC since 2006 and I work in the Division of Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention. As a child, I wanted to be a teacher or a scientist when I grew up—a female scientist to be exact! Just like my science teachers, Miss Nye, Mrs. Burns, and Mrs. Torres. Public health has allowed me to be both. As a Health Scientist working in program evaluation, I collaborate with different organizations and professionals to assess what helps people get and stay healthy and look for hurdles to achieving and maintaining optimal health. In 2013, as a member of a rapid assessment team, I partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Health to determine the effects of closing STD clinics. I interviewed personnel from the state health department and state-funded STD clinics to identify challenges and solutions for providing necessary screening and treatment services across the state. During my first international assignment to Guyana, I interviewed clinic staff and patients affected by TB or HIV. These interviews helped us assess recommended prevention and care services and identify barriers that prevented patients from returning to the clinic. Projects like these allow me to wear both my teacher and scientist hats! I love my job because I get to learn how people view their health and ensure that public health programs better meet their needs. I’m Brandy Maddox, and I AM CDC!
