Summary

English: I work for the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine as the Officer-in-Charge of the CDC Atlanta Quarantine Station at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport. I’m a public health first responder, leading and coordinating activities that prevent the introduction and spread of communicable diseases into the U.S., 24/7. We respond to illnesses and deaths on arriving airplanes, ships, and at land border crossings; evaluate sick travelers; restrict the importation of animals and products that may be a disease threat; and distribute lifesaving medications to treat rare but fatal diseases, such as malaria. We also train domestic and international organizations in emergency preparedness and response. To protect the health and safety of the nation, I worked to coordinate the screening of thousands of passengers between 2014 and 2016, during CDC’s Ebola response. Serving on the front line of public health takes grit and grace. I love my job because it keeps me on my toes, physically and intellectually, and it embodies CDC’s mission of saving lives and protecting people. I’m Bunmi Akinkugbe and I am CDC!
