Description
English:
Ipoly Region Jewish Collection and Exhibition Hall (Est. 2000) in the former (partly) Chevra kadisha building. It was built in the 1920s as a community and culture house for young people, funded by cheese manufactory owner Ehrenfeld Saul and some wealthier Jewish citizens. Between the two world wars, a theatre association and a jazz club operated here, while at the rear part was the Chevra Kadisa (the "sacred society" that handles funeral and other affairs). After the emergency period, the surviving few (less than 200 came back to the city of the former 1400+ jewish population) used it as a prayer hall. - The Balassagyarmat Great Synagogue built for 4000! people capacity in between 1839 and 1868. Exploded on December 9, 1944. The remains of the synagogue were demolished (carried away) in around 1950, and the City market built on its place. - Since 1945 the Chevra kadisha building was the prayer place. Plaque on its facade: The Hungarian 'Chevra Kádisa' (Holy Association) is the most basic and perhaps the most important institution of the Hungarian Jewish communities. In addition to dealing with the deceased and bereaved families, it is also the main charity that has been called to provide relief to the poor and sick, so this organization managed different Jewish social and medical institutions in Hungary. ( chevrakadisa.hu ) However this building, as 'Jewish Prayer House' is local grade listed - 24 Hunyadi Street, Balassagyarmat, Nógrád County, Hungary.
