Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A photograph by a professional photographer of the intersection of Ward and O'Connell Streets, North Adelaide. In the centre of the image, in Ward Street, is a 30-year-old horse-drawn tram, its lightweight construction evident, with upper-deck advertisements for Capstan tobacco and Lion flour. Behind, in O'Connell Street, are two new electric trams travelling in opposite directions on double tracks. On the left is an open Type B tram, already having gained the nickname, "toast rack". The tram on the right is a Type A "California combination" tram (i.e. it combined "inside" and "outside" seating). The photo was probably taken in 1909 since the electric tram line in North Adelaide was opened on 7 April 1909 and horse trams were withdrawn by their new owners, the Municipal Tramways Trust, as soon as practicable. People – a toddler, children and adults – are dressed in contemporary clothing.
