Experimental procedures are described for (1) detecting metastable species of xenon, krypton, and argon in rare gas crystals, and (2) measuring their mean lifetimes in the same environment. A low-temperature vessel has been designed and tested within which the sample crystal is contained, and in which an electric glow discharge can be maintained for the purpose of exciting the crystal. Both a synchronized mechanical shutter system, and an electronically-gated photomultiplier tube circuit for use in the lifetime measurements of the metastable species are described
