Description
English: Greenwich Park on Easter Monday

A view south towards the Observatory. Some of the figures on the hill have been 'tumbling' - a traditional, indecorous and sometimes dangerous occupation on the steep slopes of the Park. At least two one-legged Greenwich Pensioners are in the foreground, one playing the fiddle for the dancing group in the centre, the man on the left being in sailor's shore-going rig. Other seamen and 'beaux' are wrapped round 'ladies of easy virtue' in the foreground. Easter was the principal season for Greenwich Fair, held in the streets of the town. This also attracted large crowds to the Park but was suppressed by the local authorities in 1857 as a focus of vice and crime.
