Description
English: Greenwich Hospital from the North-East

A view from the north-east off the Trafalgar Tavern (built 1837). To the left are a sprit-rigged fishing boat and a cutter-rigged smack at the former landing place there, with a figure boiling a kettle on a foreshore fire and nets drying on the Hospital wall. The cutter is heeled over, the other boat moored to piles in the river. Other small craft lie to the right and Greenwich Pensioners and other figures appear on the Five-Foot Walk. A figure can be seen at an open upper window in the Queen Anne north-east corner with, below, the terminal pavilion of the riverfront walk within the Hospital railings. In the distance is the King Charles Court with the buildings of old Greenwich around Fisher Lane beyond. The sprit-rigged boat in the right foreground bears the artist's signature 'EP 1838' on its transom and a small boat lies across its bows with a boat-shaped floating fish-keep on board. The legend ' GREENWICH / HOSPITAL / 1838' appears in the water.
