Description |
English: LIBI_00012_07523; An assemblage of a black-and-white photographs of Grasshopper, age 75, in 1925, with description that reads, "Rattle obtained from grasshopper September 2, 1925. He said then that it was given to him when he was age 15 (about 1865). It already was an old rattle at that time. Grasshopper was the last survivor chief of the old time Cheyennes. He died in 1933. Head of rattle is of buffalo bull rawhide. The drawings are not by carving, but are by impression into the soft rawhide, after which it hardens. Thongs of buffalo skin enwrap buffalo wool on the handle. The long hair is horse tail. The feather is eagle down. Note the four indented corners about the face circle and four teepee trails on back of head. This sort of charm is used in ritualistic ceremonies as well as in doctoring sick people"; mounted on cardboard. Signed by Thomas B. Marquis.; print, photographic [mounted on card]; Courtesy of the National Park Service, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, LIBI_00012_07523,
