English: French ironclad in collision

Jean-Antoine-Théodore, Baron Gudin, a pupil of the history painter Girodet-Trioson, enjoyed international renown as a marine painter, receiving patronage from the Duc d'Orléans and the French Royal House, together with high honours. He maintained English contacts, painted in Scotland, and apart from his Salon exhibits, showed work at the Royal Academy from 1837 until 1873.
