Title
Fountain of Wild Man in Fribourg, Switzerland.
Object type statue

Description
The Wild Man Fountain in Fribourg is attributed to Stephan Ammann. The simple column probably means that this fountain sculpture was never quite finished. Amman most likely died in early 1627. This fountain rises on Pertuis Square near the valley station of the funicular railway. The motif of the Wild Man is a well-known motif of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The Wild Man stands for the struggle of virtues against vices. He thus belongs to the counter-world of the courtly world. With his club in one hand and his coat of arms in the other, he is comparable to the standard bearer. On the one hand, the Wild Man symbolises the power of the city, on the other hand, he is also a figure of the struggle against vice.
