Title
The Samaritan Woman at the fountain with Christ, group of figures from the fountain of the same name in Fribourg, Switzerland.
Object type statue
object_type QS:P31,Q179700
Description
The group of figures represents the encounter of Christ with the Samaritan woman who came to draw water at Jacob's well. The depicted scene reproduces a moment of the narrative of the Gospel of John 4:1-41. The representation has a narrative character. At Jacob's well a conversation develops between the two persons, in the course of which Christ offers the woman the water of life and converts her to the Christian faith. The Samaritan woman then goes back to her village to tell the inhabitants about it. They also run to the well and are converted by Christ. The woman becomes a role model worthy of imitation through her insight and behavior and addresses the viewer directly. The invitation to ask for the water of life, like the Samaritan woman, in order to attain eternal life becomes clear. The skull and sundial on the pillar of the well directly above the woman's head reinforce the exhortation.
