Title
Samson, fountain figure of the fountain of Samson, Fribourg
Object type Fountain , Statue
Description
Figure of Samson of the Samson's Fountain by Hans Gieng on Notre-Dame-place at Fribourg, Switzerland. In the Old Testament, Samson tears a young lion apart with his bare hands. From late antiquity, the Church has seen this as a reference to Christ's battle with the devil. In the Renaissance, Samson was also given the politico-prophane meaning of courage and strength. For the fountain figure, Hans Gieng took his cue from a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer.

Object history In 1547, the Samson group and the corresponding column were created in the workshop of Hans Gieng at the same time as the fountain of St. John and coloured by Hans Schäuffelin the Younger. The last restoration was carried out in 1957—1958. The fountain basin was reassembled from the existing materials from 1857. On this occasion, Théo Aeby created a copy of the sculptural group and the column very probably in Metz stone, which is very similar to the Neuchâtel limestone. The originals have since been in the Fribourg Museum of Art and History.
