English: Students were ranking reasons for the cause of WW1: All the Powers were guilty of self-interest; All were stock-piling weapons against the day when diplomacy finally broke down; All were pursuing their own ambitions in a world that had grown too small for the diplomatic manoeuvring which had characterised 19th century diplomacy; no power objected to war. War was a natural if regrettable part of life's rich and varied tapestry, and a short-sharp one might clear the eair much as a rainstorm clears humidity. |
