Summary[edit]

Description

The Remains of the Medieval Exe Bridge, Exeter. Completed in 1238. Originally having 18 arches and a chapel at either end. St Edmunds Tower can be seen here. The river is now channelled behind the viewer. A Regency Bridge replaced the other arches, and then that was replaced by an Iron & steel bridge in 1905. Then that being replaced by the current bride in 1972.

The remains of the Bridge you see here was probably the third stone bridge built in England, the first being London Bridge, and is now the oldest surviving medieval stone bridge in England.
