Summary[edit]

Description
English: Artist's impression of red sunset over drying up ocean of Europa 7,5 billion years from now when the Sun just reached its red giant phase. Red giants are dying stars which runs out of its nuclear fuel. They have spectral types of K/MIII. Sun would have spectral type of late KIII or early MIII for the time. As the Sun increases its luminosity, its habitable zone moves to the periphery of the Solar System, passing Mars and Jupiter and beyond. Worlds that have been frozen for billions of years are thawing but later becomes completely scorched. Due to the intense heating by red giant Sun and the weak gravity of Europa, the ocean is rapidly evaporating. Now the temperature is may reach 100 °C (370 K), but in a few million years it will rise to 730 °C (1000 K).

Jupiter and its moons (Io, Ganymede, and Callisto) also visible on the depiction.
