Hunt Respected Friend I am advised by my friends here to make application for the Office of Inspector of Flour in the City of New York. and I have Concluded to do so. to accomplish which, it will be necessary to procure Letters & Petitions to. the governor Recommending me as a suitable person to fill the Office – if Consistent with thy Feelings. thee will Oblige me by writing a Letter to him & if any other Person there concerned in Mills please get them to sign the Letter with thee & 5 or 6 or more of your Respectable Citizens – if thee can procure there signatures & put the Letter in to the Post office as soon as thee conveniently can – as the appointment will probably take place in about 2 weeks – thee will please excuse me for taking the liberty of troubling thee in this way - if it is ever in my Power it will be a pleasure to me to Reciprocate it – (over)" ["Nathaniel Pitcher is our present Governor" is written up the left side] On back of document on left " – Markets in N York for flour is extremely [dull?] prices constantly declining – we think the prospect [illegible] unpromising for the Coming season – Respectfully Thy Fr, D. Merritt Flour in NY. $ 4 3/4 @ 5 1/4 [list?] wheat 8/ - We have very little wheat in Troy" Richard P. Hunt wrote a draft of the recommendation requested by Merritt starting on the back of the document on the right side and continuing on the back of document on the left of the page under Merritt's letter: "To the Hon Nathaniel Pitcher [Luit?] Gov. of the State of New York The under signed [illegible] manufactures of flour and other [illegible] in the county of Seneca beg leave to [illegible] that they under [illegible] that Daniel Merritt [may?] [illegible] applicant for the office of inspector flour for the City of NYork the undersigned state that D Merritt had been engaged in the manufacturing of Flour for a number of years, and is believed to be an excellent jud[g]e of the Quality of Flour. his habits of Industry and Integrity we think will Qualify him for that office we believe should he be approved he will give as good satisfaction as any other man, we therefor pray that he may be nominated R.P.
