Dances from Dimitrovgrad - Čičovoto Dete carried out by SKC (Srpski Kulturni Centar) from Offenbach am Main for the 27th German championship for Serbian folklore in Berlin

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Dances from Dimitrovgrad consists of many aspects, one aspect is "Čičovoto Dete".

Čičovoto Dete starts with young men building a circle around their senior "Čičo". The young men call Čičo out of the circle by opening it. Čičo then comes out with his cane and introduces himself.

Now the men sing Čičovoto Dete: Čičovoto Dete, ja go Dovedete, Čiča će ti kaže, kak se moma laže. Čičovoto Dete, ja go Dovedete, Čiča će ti kaže, kak se moma laže.

This text means that čičo has the methods and ways of lying, ready to share with those around him. He stomps the ground with his foot and his cane to spook the girls and to make a statement. Now the girls have their turn to sing and they counter:

Od bre Čorćo, od vam bre slepco, Za tebe nema u sel devojće. Od bre Čorćo, od vam bre slepco, Za tebe nema u sel devojće.

They counter the things čičo had said by saying that no boy will not get any girl by behaving the way he proposed.

Now the dance starts again by having boys and girls on different sides, in multiple diagonal lines. Then the boys follow the lead of their own girls as they dance behind her they create 6 lines (each line consisting only girls or only boys) in the middle. The boys then leave their line to join their girl and form 3 major lines. After that the boys in those 3 major lines go shortly in pairs each with their own girl, to turn around to have a huge semicircle where everyone can be seen. They begin to sing Čičovoto Dete from the crossover of the 3 major lines till the huge semicircle:

Čičovoto Dete, ja go Dovedete, Čiča će ti kaže, kak se moma laže. Čičovoto Dete, ja go Dovedete, Čiča će ti kaže, kak se moma laže.

The girls sing immediately after the boys had sung:

Od bre Čorćo, od vam bre slepco, Za tebe nema bela pogača. Od bre Čorćo, od vam bre slepco, Za tebe nema bela pogača.

Now instead of the boys getting no girls, the girls said they will not be getting any bread for the day, meaning they will hunger, if they stick to what čičo had said. The constant switch between boys singing and girls singing clarifies that they both are cheeky to eachother and in a disagreement. The boys at the end are left to decide whether they listen to what čičo had said or what the girls have said.

The singing is mixed with Serbian and Bulgarian language, in which the significance of the two cultures is shown and they seem to flourish quite well.

Not only in language and in appearance do they share culture, also in the way of dancing. The dancing is explosive, calm, peaceful, emotional, charming and most importantly uniting.

The Dances from Dimitrovgrad tell us an entertaining story. Folklore is a beautiful way to tell a story happening in everyday life. Folklore is a happy place for happy people. Folklore unites.
