Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Course of the Stratford and Moreton Tramway. The horse drawn tramway to Moreton in Marsh was completed in 1826 and a branch to Shipston on Stour was built in 1836. It was intended to deliver coal from Black Country to these rural areas and allow limestone and agricultural products to be shipped the other way.

By 1899 the southern section between Moreton and Shipston was converted into a proper railway. This northern section to Stratford continued to be used as a horse-drawn branch-line but by the end of the 19th century it had fallen into disuse. The tracks were lifted as part of the WWI efforts in 1918.

Much of the earthworks still survive today including this overgrown stretch on an embankment across this square. The course can be traced following this path along which there are still has plenty of 181544 remaining from the rudimentary permanent way.
