This project analyzes current and historical use of United States Marine Corps (USMC) marksmanship training. Cost analysis data for the use of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer (ISMT) are presented. The analysis compares costs of using livefire training alone, versus using ISMT training. Research on the effectiveness of using the ISMT, conducted by Yates in 2004, is used as a basis for the effectiveness analysis. The questions researched are: \"Can using the ISMT reduce USMC training costs compared to using live-fire ranges alone?\" and \"Will continued use of the ISMT training be as effective as using live fire alone?\" The project identifies current USMC virtual training systems and analyzes potential opportunities for cost savings. The data presented support the hypothesis that the ISMT system will reduce costs over the years that it is used to supplement live-fire ranges. A cost analysis was conducted and a sensitivity report generated. Results provide an estimate of per-person cost of training, logistics savings, and virtual system benefits. The conclusion of the analysis is that a well-sequenced mix of ISMT and live-fire training would maximize cost savings -- and is as good for overall marksmanship quality as live fire alone.
