William Lloyd Garrison has not been able to take part in the current reform movements because of a severe case of rheumatism. Garrison writes: "In political meetings, as such, I have never allowed myself to participate; yet I watch all the political movements of the times with unabated vigilance, though I still absent myself from the ballot-box on account of conscientious scruples." He hopes that the Republican State Convention will nominate Thomas Talbot for Governor
