Description |
Produced by the Chelsea porcelain manufactory in England, this figural pair personifies Europe and America. In her left hand Europe holds an orb, an object symbolic of God's ultimate authority over the world and regal power carried by royalty during coronation ceremonies. By comparison, America is depicted as a native wearing feathers with a bow and arrows revealing the exotic and purely imagined understanding of such a faraway land. |
