Description

The window depicts an apostle in each of the four lancet-shaped window strips. These are Peter, the evangelist John, James and Andrew. This window illuminates the foremost northern side chapel. Each of the apostles is depicted under a Gothic canopy, whose moving forms recall the late Gothic period. In the background, landscapes lead into the depths. All four apostles perform emotive gestures. Thus Peter, after having slandered Christ, shamefully covers his head with both hands. John points with his right hand to the first vision of the Apocalypse that appears above him. The image of James follows the Legenda Aurea with the depiction of Hermogenes, who is depicted at the feet of the saint as a black evil sorcerer. Above James, an angel holds a dark demon at bay. Andrew announces his willingness to undergo the martyrdom of crucifixion by raising both arms longingly to heaven. The four window panels are divided analogously into an upper and a lower symbolic zone and a central figure zone. The lower symbolic zone is constructed as a plinth zone. Here, the lettering of the apostles' names connects two console-like parts to form a bridge. They form the lower boundary of the stand level for the figure zone.

Symbolic references from the life of the saint characterise the figure depicted: a cockerel is recognisable next to Peter and the dome of St. Peter on a rocky landscape above and a sailing ship with white billowed sails above. In the lower symbolic zone is the attribute assigned to him, two crossed keys. St. John the Evangelist is identifiable by the attribute of the eagle, which is familiar to him. The same motifs from the Legenda Aurea of James of Voragine are assigned to St. James in the upper and lower zones: An angel holds a dark being at bay. St. Andrew is identifiable with the cross of St. Andrew and in the background the cross of Christ in a rocky landscape. In the lower symbolic zone are his words: O BONA CRUX.

Identification of the fields within a double lancet window
Within a double lancet window, the fields are numbered line by line from bottom to top with Arabic numerals and marked lane by lane from left to right with lower case letters. This creates a coordinate system for unambiguous identification of each field in the double lancet window.
