Description
English: Bookplate of Joseph Watson, 1st Baron Manton (1873–1922), in Sporting Anecdotes by Ellangowan, London, 1889. Arms, adopted in 1922 on his elevation to the peerage: Argent, on a chevron azure between four martlets three in-chief and one in-base sable a crescent between two roses of the field; crest: A gryphon passant sable in front of an oak tree proper; supporters: On either side a gryphon per fess azure and argent charged on the shoulder with a rose also argent. (Source: Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.739). The heraldic badge of Lord Manton is shown at top left within a baron's coronet, possibly a sprig of Love-in-Idleness (wild pansy (Viola tricolor)), the name of a racehorse owned by Joseph Watson, 1st Baron Manton, which won the Epsom Oaks in 1921.
