Bee taking nectar from our Lavender Leigh Park, Hampshire, England in August 2022

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In the hot weather of August 2022 from mid-morning until late afternoon there was a steady procession of bees coming to take nectar off the lavender, with typically one, two or even three coming quite frequently. Most were of the smaller variety, but one or two were larger (not among this image set).

The University of Sussex/Brighton did a survey noting bumble bees had longer tongues than honey bees and this made gathering nectar from lavender easier for the bumble bee.

Some of the images in the set show the rear legs clearly and they do not appear to be stuffed with pollen. The likely reason is the bees are drinking nectar rather than gathering pollen into their rear leg collection baskets.

Images in this set were taken with a Canon 60D with a second hand Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro OS - Canon Fit - essentially 5 to 10 year old equipment.

At this time the precise identification of the subspecies of bee is not identified. A generic location has been given but this is a neutral public minor grassed area within 500m of the garden of the actual shot location.
