Description
English: The Bastei is a rock formation rising 194 metres above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany. Reaching a height of 305 metres above sea level, the jagged rocks of the Bastei were formed by water erosion over one million years ago. They are situated near Rathen southeast of the city of Dresden. The Bastei is the major landmark of the Saxon Switzerland National Park.
Deutsch: Elbsandsteinfelsen der Bastei im Nationalpark Sächsische Schweiz bei Rathen. Oxidierende Mineralien im Gestein sind die Ursachen für die graue Färbung von Sandstein. Zum einen ist es der Mineralbestand von Sandsteinen selbst, dem es zu verdanken ist, dass das Sedimentgestein im Laufe der Zeit eine Umfärbung aufweist. Eisen- und manganhaltige Mineralien wie Goethit, Hämatit oder Pyrit oxidieren und färben den Sandstein grau oder dunkelbraun bis schwarz. Ferner sorgen diverse Stickstoff- und Schwefelverbindungen, aber auch Algen dafür, dass sich die ursprüngliche Farbe von Sandstein verändert.
