Description

A forest of Bald Cypress trees stand in a "swamp" in Congaree National Park, South Carolina. While this area is similar to a swamp, and was even called one for a period of time, Congaree is considered "bottomland" with it's seasonal flooding and the largest tract of old growth bottomland in the United States. These Bald Cypress trees are suited to life in these floodplains, with a root system that grows "knees" that stick up out of the water, potentially for support and stabilization in flooded lands. Several Cypress Knees are seen in the foreground.

This area was seen on a hike around the boardwalk of Congaree, taking a short detour onto Sims Trail.
