Baganda traditional dance performance by Ndere Troupe
Summary[edit]
| Description |
English: The dance originated in the Buganda palace near Lake Victoria, associated with the King of Buganda and his enjoyment of a local banana beer called tonto omwenge. One day, the king became very happy after drinking too much of the beer, and in his praise of those who made it, he coined phrases like "abaakisiimba" and "bebaakiwoomya". Musicians at the gathering created a rhythm based on these phrases, while women imitated the king's movements, leading to the formation of the dance. The dance, now known as abaakisiimba, consists of three major movements: Nankasa, Baakisiimba, and Muwogola. |
