Badrinath temple with Bhot musicians of Mana region, picture from 1894's Himalaya Album by Kurt Boeck.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: (Translated from German via Google Translate) This pilgrimage site, sacred to the Hindus, is located 3,087.8 m (10,124') high on the Alaknanda, a source of the Ganges, and belongs to the Gharwal province. Every 12 years is the pigrimage drive there on an arduous pilgrimage path along the Ganges. The editor did not reach Badrinat on this pilgrimage route but from Milam via the Utadurha glacier pass on the Tibetan border and through the valleys of the Girthi and Dhauli Ganga.

In the distance you can see the golden domes of the ancient temple. For seven days, the pilgrims must wash away their sins in the waters of the Alaknanda glacier stream or in the hot sulfur springs that arise here, walk barefoot around the temple and make threefold monetary offerings: for the idol, for its food and clothing, and for the Bramans. In return, they receive grains of rice and flowers (which were offered to the idol), as well as ashes from the dung of sacred temple cows to paint their forehead marks. The temple at Badrinath has rich land holdings; the lucrative office of Chief Braman is awarded to the highest bidder from the Chauli or Namburi tribe.

The men in the foreground, of whom the middle one is spinning wool, are native Bhot Rajputs who are in the habit of giving a brief escort to the departing pilgrims with music.
