Description
English: Application for extension of an alien bond made by General Douglas MacArthur in respect of Loh Chui, the Cantonese amah of his then one-year-old son, Arthur. She subsequently accompanied MacArthur, his wife and Arthur on their harrowing escape from Japanese forces in the Philippines during World War II. MacArthur defended his decision to take her instead of an American nurse: "Few people outside the Orient" know how completely a member of the family an amah can become, and Ah Cheu [sic] had been with us since Arthur's birth. Because of her relationship to my family, her death would have been certain had she been left behind." She remained with the family, and in her latter years with Mrs MacArthur, until her death in the 1970s. The document shows her correct name. It has been widely misquoted as "Ah Cheu" – apparently an onomatopoeic play on the sound of sneezing – which was used by MacArthur, among others. Her letters to the Bailey family (her employers before the MacArthur family), held in the MacArthur Memorial, were signed "Ah Cheu", indicating her own use of the name.
