Abstract of Testimony before Thomas Slidell, United States District Attorney
Description
Rufus Tyler, Chief Coiner of the United States Branch Mint at
New Orleans, and James Maxwell, Melter & Refiner, were accused of
malfeasance by Superintendent Bradford. An investigation was ordered
by the Treasury Department and New Orleans District Attorney Thomas
Slidell was put in charge of the proceedings. Inquiry consumed several
weeks with Slidell’s commission meeting daily from about 4pm until
late in the evening due to extremely hot weather.

After thirteen days of testimony (which is the content of this
NARA box) and review in Washington, Tyler and Maxwell were found
blameless. Unfortunately, by the time a decision was reached, both men
had died from Yellow Fever.
