Description
English: A Prospect of Greenwich Hospital from the River

An axial perspective view of Greenwich Hospital from a position above the river, looking south towards the Queen's House, with the Royal Observatory visible on the hill above in Greenwich Park. The print also bears a French title paired with the English one, 'Veue de l' Hospital de Greenwich du Cote de la Riviere' [sic], above which, below the image, are the inscriptions 'Sir Christopher Wren Architect' (left) and 'J. June Sculp', (right).

This is a partly-lettered proof, lacking publisher imprint, which is given on another copy (PAF7632) below the title as 'E. Bakewell & H. Parker Opposite Birchin Lane in Cornhill'. These appear to be examples of the prime version of at least three same-size prints (see PAF7623, PAF7624, and PAF7634) from different publishers. The J. June version was possibly based on the larger panoramic views by R. Parr, circa 1751-60, (PAH3278) or T. Lawranson (PAH3290), with the others later derived from it. Another possible source may be the unpeopled view engraved by B. Cole (e.g. PAI0484), possibly made for Maitland's History of London (1755).

The stern of a small Royal Naval warship heading downstream appears on the left, as does that of a royal yacht, firing a salute, as it heads upstream on the right. What appears to be a Dutch sprit-rigged dogger is in the centre, heading downstream in port-bow view. Thames wherries (one under sail) and other boats make their way past on the river and many figures populate the grounds of the Hospital and the paved riverfront walk.
